In a somewhat ironic twist of fate, the world was turning to Google for answers about the downtime -- so much so that for a window of time, 18 of the top 20 US searches on Google were queries related to Gmail being down.
Rarely does any news, regardless of how monumental, become a Google Trend so many times over. It seems as if the world stopped to search about Gmail issues:
