Godspeed, Scott Carpenter: Mercury 7 Astronaut Dies at 88

Scott Carpenter, the astronaut who uttered the historic "Godspeed" sendoff to John Glenn, died on Thursday at 88. He was one of the last surviving members of the original Mercury 7 mission. Glenn is the only member who is still alive from that mission.

On May 24, 1962, Carpenter was the second American to orbit Earth after he piloted the Aurora capsule.
