LOS ANGELES -- It's a bit like Whisper, but darker, more depressing, and if you get pulled into its current it can drown your entire lunch break.

It's the "River of Secrets," an interactive environment that 20th Century Fox is launching Thursday as part of its promotion for Gone Girl, David Fincher's deliciously twisted adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel hitting theaters this weekend.

"What do you hide from the one you love?" is the question -- and anonymous users can post their answers, either as bursts of text or, in what's even more chilling, bits of voice audio, which can be recorded via a toll-free number.

"I wish I knew how to be more honest about what I'm thinking. ... His drinking was really hard for me," says one user in the demo (above). Another: "I hide money."

As you look out over the river, written confessions roll on by, while audio creates ripples in the water. Gloomy music plays over the bleak, dusky scene. It's pretty dreadful -- and that's the point.

Using emerging webGL technology, the River of Secrets is meant to evoke the Mississippi River, which runs through the fictitious Missouri town where Nick and Amy Dunne (Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike) live -- and becomes a part of the harrowing search-and-rescue mission. It's also inspired by Amy's diary, itself full of damning secrets that were never meant to be shared.

Feel free to overshare. It can't possibly come back to haunt you ... right?
