Google Acquires Online Image-Editing Tool Picnik

Google has just acquired Picnik, a popular web-based image editing software. The sale was announced on the Picnik blog and the Google Photos blog.

Picnik, which first started in 2005, has become a popular online alternative to image-editing software such as Photoshop. While not as feature-rich as its desktop counterparts, its user experience, simplicity and upbeat design have helped it gain nearly two million monthly U.S. visitors, according to Compete.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Picnik will remain up and operational, at least for the foreseeable future. It's very possible that Google could turn Picnik into part of its Google Apps suite, though Google hasn't announced its plans for the image editing tool.
