Google's acquisitions of social applications are continuing apace: today they're announcing that they've acquired JotSpot, the wiki service founded in 2004 by Joe Kraus, who originally founded Excite. As was the case with previous acquisitions, they've temporarily closed Jot to new signups - new users will need to join a waiting list while they migrate the service to Google's systems. JotSpot will also become completely free.

Joe hopes that the deal will let Jot benefit from Google's audience, infrastructure and knowledge. The deal is officially closed, although details are not being released, so we don't know the price. There's also no confirmation as to whether the service will be renamed "G-Spot".

Google is pretty active in this space: the most obvious comparison is the acquisition of Writely, a web-based word processor. Writely was later merged with Google Spreadsheets, creating the far less catchy "Google Docs & Spreadsheets".
