It is a minor feature update to GMail and Google search, but it could point to an upcoming feature update to Google Docs. Google Operating System noted yesterday that you can now view documents created by Microsoft Office 2007 or greater.
GMail will convert the files to HTML, if desired, which as Lifehacker notes could make for a particularly useful utility in a snap if you need to bulk-convert a ton of files to HTML. And even though GMail and Google Search won't allow you to simply import the file directly into Google Docs, you can save the HTML version and manually copy and paste that into Google Docs' code view.
