Today's Google Doodle honors German pianist and composer Clara Schumann, who was born Sept. 13, 1819.

The wife of composer Robert Schumann, Clara is known as one of the best pianists of the Romantic era. She was somewhat of a child prodigy, already playing concert tours at the age of 11.

She and her husband were friends of composer Johannes Brahms, and Clara performed some of his works for the first time.

She was also known as one of the first pianists to perform from memory. She was instrumental in promoting her husband's works, which subsequently became famous.
