Muybridge was born April 9, 1830 in Kingston upon Thames, England, but he emigrated to the United States at the age of 25, and spent the majority of his life there.
He was known for his photographs of the West, especially of the Yosemite and San Francisco, and later for his work on animal locomotion and an invention called the zoopraxiscope, an early device for displaying motion pictures.
The animated doodle, a highly stylized version of Google's usual logo, echoes a legendary series of images by Muybridge, which proved that, at one point during a horse's gallop, all of the animal's legs are in the air at the same time.
