Google celebrated the birthday of the late Cesar Chavez on Sunday, choosing to honor the labor leader with its logo instead of another notable holiday: Easter.
The Google Doodle frames an illustration of Chavez in the third letter, acknowledging what would have been his 86th birthday. In 2011, President Barack Obama proclaimed March 31 as Cesar Chavez Day to commemorate work of the American labor leader, organizer, activist and farm worker.
Though the company hasn't posted an Easter-related doodle since 2000, social media users took to Twitter on Sunday in outrage.
BTW Google (oh font of all information) it's Easter too.— Bryant Delafosse (@BryantDelafosse) March 31, 2013
#Google I do think it was a strange choice though, considering how big an occasion it is worldwide #Easter— Lindsay Gordon (@LinziSue) March 31, 2013
Thank you Google, your decision to honor Cesar Chavez on Easter makes it easier to switch to Bing.— Bob (@MfgMan) March 31, 2013
Google's main competition, Microsoft search engine Bing, celebrated the holiday with multi-colored decorated eggs.
