Tuesday's Google Doodle illustrated the annual Perseid meteor shower, which has been taking place throughout the week.

The animated illustration shows the phenomenon from various perspectives. Periodically, meteors dash across the screen as the different backgrounds move clockwise, accompanied by soft guitar instrumentals. The scene ends with Google's name spelled out in constellations.

"I was inspired by long drives I've taken and trips to national parks, as well as by the subject matter -- space!" designer Sophie Diao wrote on the doodles site. "The visual spectacle in front of you, combined with being 'in the middle of nowhere,' definitely evokes some type of feeling."

This is not the first time Google has marked the meteor shower's arrival with a doodle, but the last time it did so was in 2009. This year's illustration can be found either on the doodle's explanatory page or on Google's homepage.

The shower is most visible Tuesday and Wednesday, with the exact time varying depending on viewer location. For the New York City area, stargazers will have the best luck between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday.
