It's been six months since Nelson Mandela, the man who spent his life fighting apartheid in South Africa and endured to become the nation's first Black President, died at the age of 95. Now, on what would have been his 96th birthday, Google is paying tribute to the inspirational leader with an animated Google Doodle.

Google's doodle traces six of Mandela's most powerful quotes from throughout his life with animated words and images to illustrate the time and place.

Mandela spent 27 years in prison for allegedly conspiring to overthrow South Africa's government, which at the time operated under South Africa's racial segregation system known as apartheid. He was finally released from prison by then-South Africa President Frederik Willem de Klerk who began the process of dismantling apartheid. In 1994, Mandela was elected president of South Africa.

Mandela retired from politics in 1999, but remained on the world stage for years after and served as an inspiration to people not just in South Africa, but around the world. He died on December 5, 2013.
