About 33 million people are expected to drive to their vacation destinations this Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA. That's a 5.3% increase from last year, and more than in the past 10 years.

In anticipation of the beginning of the busy summer travel season, Google Maps has made some changes to its mobile app.

"Now when you input your destination, you’ll get an explanation of upcoming traffic conditions that helps you identify the quickest route," the company wrote in a blog post. "While you’re on the road, Google Maps will give you a heads up if congestion lies ahead, and how long you’ll be stuck in a jam."

The traffic alert update also offers alternative routes if they can get you to your destination faster, along with an explanation of why they're faster.

With so many people on the road this summer, traffic will be guaranteed. Even with the help of more detailed traffic alerts, however, the best road-trip accessory may be patience.
