In a recent blog post, Google announced its biggest 3D modeling challenge to date: the Google Model Your Town Competition. Teams can work together to create 3D models of their towns, which they must upload by the end of February 2010.

This video explains the process:

With the help of tools like Building Maker and SketchUp, teams can create 3D portraits of their own communities. The contest is open to everyone, and the winning team or individual will get $10,000 for their public school district (or international equivalent), tons of publicity, a visit from the Google team and an event in their honor.
