Early this year, rumors surfaced that Google was planning to launch its own personal computer, loaded with Google applications and absent of a Microsoft Windows operating system. Those rumors proved false, as Google had no real interest into getting into the capital intensive, low-margin business of PC manufacturing. However, a new ultra low-cost PC from Everex is a means to the end that such speculation focused on.

The Everex “gPC” is a Linux-based PC being sold through Wal-Mart, with a price tag of just $200. It comes with easy access to Google applications like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google’s now complete online office suite – Google Docs. Additionally, OpenOffice comes standard with the gPC to provide desktop office functionality. It should be noted that there is no official relationship to speak of between Google and Everex.

The computer has a very usable 1.5-gigahertz processor, 512 megabytes of memory, and 80GB hard drive. While it might not be a computing powerhouse, for low income families looking for their first PC, it’s a potentially attractive option, and gets them using Google on day one of their lives on the Internet.
