The final nail in Google+ Photos' coffin is going in.

Google announced it will be closing down its Google+ Photos service, starting with the Android version on Aug. 1, the company announced in a Google+ post on Thursday. Shutdown times for the iOS and web versions will happen soon after.

Google is pushing for users to transition to its new Google Photos service, which lets users upload an unlimited number of photos and videos at 16 megapixels and 1080p full HD resolution, respectively -- for free.

To ensure uninterrupted service when switching from Google+ Photos to Google Photos, the company advises users to download and install the new photos app or export data using Google Takeout. Users will also find their photos and videos backed up at photos.google.com.

Our review of Google Photos called the service a smart photo organizer with lots of polish, praising its machine learning capabilities and assistant feature that can automatically create "stories" and GIFs from a group of burst-shot photos.

While Google Photos is clearly a powerful service, its image recognition still has bugs. Earlier this month, the service inadvertently identified two black people as "gorillas." Google quickly removed the tag.
