Slowly but surely, Project Fi, Google's mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), is broadening its device support.

Project Fi users can now order a data-only SIM card for select Android tablets and iPads equipped with cellular antennas. Supported devices include the Nexus 7, Nexus 9, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4 and Galaxy Tab S.

The data rate for these data-only SIM cards is the same as regular Project Fi for smartphones: $10 per gigabyte. Google says the SIM cards provide data coverage in more than 120 countries. Project Fi users can add up to nine data-only SIM cards to their account.

There is one caveat if you plan on giving your supported some pay-per-data: you can't tether another device to it as a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Project Fi had a shaky launch in the spring, only working with the Nexus 6. Google's wireless network has since been expanded to support the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

Though, Google is now extending Project Fi to just tablets with data-only service, it's still a big improvement.
