A rare winter storm dumped a heap of snow on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon on New Year's Day, turning the desert treasure into a "winter wonderland."

The roads were snow-packed and icy on Thursday, the National Park Service wrote on its Flickr page, reporting that even more snow fell that morning.

"It is a winter wonderland out there," the National Park Service said.

The snow was still visible on Friday after snow fell across Flagstaff, Arizona on Wednesday and Thursday.

Many shared striking photos and video of the fluffy white stuff in the canyon on social media, including the National Park Service.
