'The Great Gatsby' Wasn't Nearly as Great Before Video FX

Baz Luhrmann's version of The Great Gatsby may have received mixed reviews when it hit theaters in May, but it's tough to deny the film's stunning visuals.

Luhrmann brought the Roaring Twenties to life in glittering shots of lavish parties and twinkling cityscapes. Part of the film's appeal is the retina-stinging imagery in every shot -- a vintage car whizzing down the road, a gown dripping with beads, an art deco castle arching skywards.

Chris Godfrey, the film's video effects supervisor, has released a before and after reel to reveal how he and his team recreated Fitzgerald's world. Watch the reel below to get a taste of how Gatsby came to life. The movie's theme, Lana del Rey's hauntingly melodic "Young and Beautiful," provides the clip's musical background.

What do you think of the before and after reel?
