Well, that was heartbreaking.
In Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy, the show lived up to its reputation as a soul-crushingly honest exploration of modern relationships by breaking up one of the series most beloved couples.

Of course, we should have seen this coming.
Callie and Arizona are clearly meant to be together, but recent weeks have seen the couple struggle like never before. And we're talking about a couple that has dealt with a lot together -- near-death experiences, the loss of friends, the loss of limbs.
Thursday's episode took us deep into their core issues and saw them take a bold step to repairing their relationship -- by staying far away from each other for a whole month.
It didn't go exactly as planned -- both were prone to jealousy at certain times and they had trouble keeping their hands off each other. But their time apart made them both realize something. Arizona realized that she needed Callie, her anchor.
Unfortunately, Callie realized that their entire relationship was an anchor -- and not in a good way.
"I finally feel free," she said of their time apart, "and by being free, I can see now that constantly trying to fix this is the thing that's been killing me slowly. And I don't want to do it anymore."
And the Internet crumbled.
