We said 2007 would be the year of mobile, and it already is - Groovr is another new mobile social network that launched on December 29th.

Like most mobile-specific sites, the Django-powered service is based around text messaging: you "check in" to a place by texting "@ name-of-place" to [email protected]. This feature tracks where all the users are, allowing you to find out where all your friends are by texting a question mark to the same address. You can also leave comments on places and text "@home" to signal that you're back at your pad. What's more, you can send photos to the service and have them grouped on the location's page. Obviously users have profile pages which aggregate all their check ins, photos and friends, and there's a forum to discuss everything that doesn't fit elsewhere.

It is, quite frankly, pretty cool. Groovr is at the same time amazingly simple and strangely compelling - it's also extremely well-designed. It stacks up well against rivals like JuiceCaster, Wadja, Zemble and Socialight (see Mobile Social Networks for a more complete list). The only thing missing? A widget to post your location and photos on your blog or MySpace page.
