LOS ANGELES -- Leave it to the writers to finally have some fun with the season of all-too-serious awards.
Someone was eventually going to give Guardians of the Galaxy, 2014's top-grossing film in all its goofy, random, spaced-out glory, a serious awards nomination. And that someone was the Writers Guild of America, which honored the Disney/Marvel juggernaut with a nomination for best adapted screenplay on Wednesday.
Can Guardians win it? Almost certainly not, but weirder things have happened. It's up against American Sniper, Gone Girl, The Imitation Game and Wild, none of which featured a talking raccoon or a tree with a single catchphrase.
But it will give Guardians co-writers James Gunn (who also directed) and Nicole Perlman an excuse to go to the WGA ceremony on Feb. 14.
As for original screenplay, the WGA nominees are: Boyhood, Foxcatcher, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Nightcrawler and Whiplash. Worthy adversaries all.
