Touching Guinness Ad Has a Surprising Twist

The subject of this Guinness ad -- a basketball game -- is hardly groundbreaking for the beer category.

Yet the ad cleverly subverts a cliche of the genre to reveal a clever, touching twist. Released on Sept. 3, the ad has accrued about 60,000 views. Perhaps more importantly, it made the front page of Reddit Thursday under the heading "One of the best alcohol commercials in a while."

As usual with Reddit, the discussion went in a strange direction. YouTube commenters were more straightforward in their praise. One noted, "This is advertising done well. I will buy Guinness from now on because of that ad." Another admitted, "Have to say, I shed a tear."

Update: A commenter has pointed out that the ad appears similar to the one below for an Indian product called Mother Dairy Chillz. A rep for BBDO, the ad agency behind the Guinness ad, referred questions to Diageo, Guinness's owner. Diageo reps could not be reached for comment.
