The latest trailer for Halo 5: Guardians is a live-action look at the public announcement of the Spartan hero's demise. Master Chief is a war hero of global renown, having saved the Earth from alien threats multiple times.
He's not actually dead, of course, being that he's one of Guardians' stars. But the average in-game citizen doesn't know that.
