Hanukkah celebrates a miracle that occurred after a Jewish rebel army known as the Maccabees reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, which had been overtaken by a Hellenistic empire before the common era. After purifying the temple, there was only enough oil to light the menorah for one night, but the oil miraculously lasted eight nights.
