Creating the meticulously stylized world of the Harry Potter films was no simple feat. J.K. Rowling's fantastical series included dozens of cute, creepy and otherwise magical creatures that were central to the plot of the films.

A new book by Harper Collins and Warner Bros. called Harry Potter: The Creature Vault gives readers a peek at how artists brought those creatures to the screen.

The concept art for dementors, goblins and grindylows reveals several interesting changes made throughout the creation of the film universe. But seriously, what's up with the goblin?

Check out 12 images from the book, which sheds light on the art for one of the most popular film series of all time.
