Young Democrats are more active than Republicans on almost every major social-media platform, according to a new study published Tuesday by Harvard's Institute of Politics.

Google+ presented the largest split -- 52% of Democrats polled have an account on the platform, while Republicans only clocked in at 36%. Twitter and Pinterest both showed an 8% difference between the political parties, but the latter is the only network on which Republicans have the edge over Democrats. Facebook was most popular among both parties, with 87% of Democrats and Republicans using the social-media giant.

The Institute of Politics surveyed 3,058 Americans aged 18 to 29. Facebook was found to be the most essential network overall, but Pinterest saw the most growth in users since the fall of 2013, with an 8% change. Google+ is most popular among graduate students -- 61% have an account -- while only 40% of high school students and 41% of undergraduates are on the site. College students use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat and Tumblr all more than young Americans who are not, or have never been, enrolled.

In addition to social-media use, the survey covered a myriad of other topics, including marijuana legalization, party identification and affirmative action.
