Australia's favourite NFL player, Jarryd Hayne, has been dropped from the San Francisco 49ers squad and his entire homeland has gone into mourning.

Much was made of Hayne's debut with the 49ers, after the former rugby league star left a high-paying gig in Australia to try his luck at American football. The hype surrounding his signing has seen his every move dissected and devoured by fans around the world.

On Saturday, Hayne -- known affectionately as the Hayne Plane -- lost his place on the team in favour of promoting running back Kendall Gaskins from the practice squad.

What this means is that Hayne has been placed on waivers, where another NFL club can claim him for their squad, with priority given to the worst performing clubs. If he doesn't get picked up by another team, the 49ers can choose to keep Hayne on their practice squad.

Hayne is said to be "shocked and upset" regarding the dumping, but has tweeted a message of support to his fellow teammates ahead of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams.

Blessed for another test. Thanks for the love TW. Wish my guys all the best against the Rams. if nothing happens Ill be back on Tuesday— jarryd hayne (@JarrydHayne) October 31, 2015

The former Parramatta Eels rugby league star signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in March. He has played six games this season, with eight carries for 25 yards and eight punt returns for 76 yards on special teams.

Australians are hoping Hayne can survive this turbulence.
