In a letter to shareholders released on Tuesday, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings hinted that a deal between Netflix and its competitor was on the table.

"While we compete for content and viewing time with HBO, it is also possible we will find opportunities to work together -- just as we do with other networks," Hastings and Chief Financial Officer David Wells said in their letter, according to Reuters.

But HBO was quick to issue its blunt rebuttal.

"We are not in discussions and have no plans to work with Netflix," HBO spokesman Jeff Cusson said.

The Time Warner-owned channel does offer online streaming through its HBO Go service. Subscribers can instantly access a full library of its shows on their computer, smartphones and tablets. Time Warner also has a custom iPad app that live streams HBO channels for its premium subscribers. This service is one of the main reasons Netflix considers HBO to be a top competitor.

HBO has always kept a notoriously tight hold on its premium programming. Earlier this year, the channel refused to provide Netflix with True Blood DVDs.

But when it comes to the Internet, the more exclusive the content, the more illegal downloads.

Season two of Game of Thrones is on track to becoming the most pirated show this year. And fans of the breakout comedy Girls are logging into parents' and friends' HBO Go accounts to catch up on the show.
