SAN DIEGO -- Heroes Reborn creator Tim Kring kicked off a panel for the upcoming NBC miniseries with a message to fans who may have fallen off the Heroes train back during the show's original run: "We had a long rest and we're ready to save the world again."

But it's the heroes that need saving when Heroes Reborn begins.

Set five years after the public became aware of the existence of evolved humans -- or "EVOs" -- the series will find those with powers under attack.

In this series, said Kring, discovering a power takes on a new meaning.

"Now, if you were to wake up with a power in our thing, it'd be a very, very bad thing," he said. "It takes the basic idea of the show and cranks it up a bit...There are a little more stakes."

Kring was joined on stage by much of the cast, including newcomer Zachary Levi, who marks his return to NBC with his role as Luke, a vigilante EVO killer.

"Chuck never killed anyone," Levi said, referring to the role he played on the television show Chuck from 2007-12, "and Luke Collins believes in using a Glock."

And he uses it well. In the new, full-length trailer dropped during the panel, Levi's character goes on a bit of a killing spree.

NBC also screened a new, action-packed scene from the show for the fans in attendance.

In it, a sword-wielding Hiro (Masi Oka) shows up just in time to save Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) from a terrible situation. Kinda. It doesn't exactly go as planned, as his foe quickly recovers from having both his arms cut off. Oh, and he multiplies.

Heroes Reborn premieres Thursday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
