There's nothing like a relaxing hike around a Chilean volcano to enjoy the outdoors -- until said volcano begins violently erupting.

And that's what happened when one hiker approached the Calbuco volcano on Wednesday afternoon.

"There aren't many people here," the hiker says in Spanish, with the sound of the waterfalls in the background. "Beautiful, the volcano there..." At which point there is a very honest, very surprised, "Wow."

Neither scientists nor government authorities expected the eruption, which last erupted in 1972.
