Whether we're sending Santa emojis to friends over Facebook, meeting our cousin’s new baby over Skype or photo-spamming our mom over Viber, most of us will check in with someone across the globe at least once this holidays.

As much as we know how valuable these moments with loved ones are, we've become so accustomed to instant connectivity that we tend to forget it wasn't too long ago that connecting with someone across the world took weeks rather than seconds.
