Alongside tanks and jets, the U.S. government has added robot fish to its security forces.

The Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate is funding the development of an unmanned underwater vehicle designed to look like a tuna fish, according to news site Science, Space and Robots.

Called the BIOSwimmer, the fish-shaped vehicle can navigate efficiently through harsh environments and hard-to-reach areas, such as flooded bilges and tanks. It can also inspect and protect harbors.

"We're using nature as a basis for design and engineering a system that works exceedingly well," David Taylor, program manager for the Science and Technology Directorate, said in a statement. "Tuna have had millions of years to develop their ability to move in the water with astounding efficiency."
