Pushing boundaries is nothing new for indie brand Hood By Air. Last season, designer Shayne Oliver sent his models down the runway wearing nude stockings over their faces, flattening their hair and squishing their features in awkward positions.

It's no surprise that this season's beauty look also employed the shock factor. Oliver blurred lines by not blending them in. Playing off the recent contouring craze championed by the Kardashians, M.A.C artists painted model's faces with blunt stripes of browns and beige.

This technique once used solely by theatre companies to transform actors into a cast of characters (see how this man turned himself into all of the Kardashian women) has now gained mainstream acceptance of fake high cheekbones and perfect noses.

The clothing in Oliver's spring collection included backless jumpsuits and cut-out skirts inspired by deconstructed school uniforms for rebels. It's no wonder that the beauty look further broke the rules, leaving the styling undone and raw.

Whether Oliver was mocking the makeup phenomenon or embracing the ability to transform, his spring 2016 runway proved there's beauty in the breakdown.
