Treadmill desks are so last year. With this new contraption from Artist-in-Residence Robb Godshaw and Instructables Developer Will Doenlen, you aren’t just spinning your wheels.

The two of them collaborated at San Francisco-based Pier 9 to build the Hamster Wheel Standing Desk in a 24-hour session.

The wheel runs at the natural speed of the user’s stride and seems to encourage those inside to keep on keeping on.

Once a desk was incorporated into the wheel, Goddshaw and Doenlen realized that having it there gives the user more balance.

“Once the desk is inside of it it’s much easier to control because you have something to hold onto and something to stop with,” Goddshaw told FastCo.Exist. “I think future versions might include some type of brake.”

They also think that the wheel would work well with a generator. A user could produce electricity while “wheeling,” just like bikes and other workout equipment does today.

We’ve seen treadmill-like wheels before. This concept treadmill lets runners do laundry while getting a workout.
