Over the weekend, relentless rain triggered by moisture from Hurricane Joaquin and a separate weather system left large areas of the U.S. Southeast under water.

Large areas of North Carolina and South Carolina were hit the hardest.

The storm system triggered historic flooding and resulted in at least nine deaths.

The Charleston area recorded rainfall rates of 1-to-4 inches per hour or higher for multiple hours at a time.

Some areas near Charleston picked up more than two feet of rain in less than four days, a rainfall event that corresponds to a rarer than once-in-1,000-years storm.
