It's been 17 summers since Jennifer Love Hewitt was on the run from her past and a murderous stalker seeking revenge in I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Sony knows what the low-budget slasher did at the box office ($125 million worldwide).

And so comes news of a possible reboot: Though Sony isn't confirming it, Deadline reports that the studio has hired Oculus co-writer and director Mike Flanagan to write a script. Fear not, '90s purists -- that's about as early in the process as it gets -- and with no director, cast or production greenlight, the project could kick around in development for years, or never get made.

Flanagan tweeted news of his involvement Monday.

Happy to be writing a new "I Know What You Did Last Summer." (I'm NOT, however, directing or producing... Not sure where that came from)

I Know What You Did Last Summer, the 1997 flick about a group of teenagers stalked by a killer out for revenge, spawned a 1998 sequel that made $84 million. The first film also starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr.
