LONDON -- Idris Elba is best known for his major films and lead role in British detective drama Luther, but the actor is now ready to give musicals a try.
In an interview with NME to be published Friday, Elba, who currently takes to the stage as a DJ using the name "Driis" admits that although he does not have "the chops to sing," he would like to explore it.
Describing himself as fearless, he says: “I’m not worried about failing. A lot of people are, because it’s embarrassing to fail, isn’t it? I’m not really worried about that. I’ve failed at a bunch of stuff. It’s just makes me get up and go back in.”
Earlier this year, Elba gave a speech about the lack of diversity in television and called for a Magna Carta moment in British broadcasting.
When asked about the developments since he addressed British politicians, he said: "I know for a fact that at the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV, literally the next day there was a summit of all the creative heads about diversity.”
Although Elba has done a lot of things and played some really great roles, he is still not used to being a celebrity.
"I’m still adjusting to celebrity, to be honest,” he tells NME. “You can’t imagine what it’s like until you get there and I’m still there now. I like the work, that’s what I like. The celebrity aspect is something else entirely.”
