Apple users took to Twitter to vent their frustrations over iMessage and FaceTime service interruptions.

iOS devices and Macs with OS X 10.6.6 or higher experienced a nearly five-hour outage, from 11:45 a.m. to 4:32 p.m. PT (2:45 to 7:45 p.m. ET) after the Cupertino, Calif. company's instant messenger service and video-calling app suffered from downtime.

Apple confirmed the outages on its status page around 1:30 p.m. PT (4:30 p.m. ET), saying that some "users are unable to use" use iMessage or place FaceTime calls.

At the time of writing, the company's system status page says, "Normal service has been restored." It's unclear what caused the downtime. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Prior to the fix, however, iPad and iPhone owners were among those who complained about the lack of service on Twitter.
