In Defense of Math: 7 Reasons Numbers Rule

Out of all the classes you dread in school, math is one of the least favorable subjects.

How many times have you found yourself saying "I'll never use this in real life!" while suffering through calculus homework or geometry class? Despite what you think, math is helpful and necessary for many modern reasons. Without math, your fantasy football team would be even sadder.

Mashable asked Patrick Honner, Gary Rubinstein and Melanie Smith from Math for America (MfA) to give us their best reasons why math deserves more credit. While they gave us a number of ways it applies to your pop-culture-drenched life, even mathematicians know your textbook math class is snooze-worthy.

"Much of what we call 'math' nowadays is not worthy of defending since it has not earned that title. Actual 'mathematics' is one of the great achievements of the human race, up there with language, music and art," the MfA master teachers wrote in an email.

So the next time you want to bang your head on your desk over a math equation, don't be so irrational.
