The world's second-most populous country India continues to be overwhelmingly young, with 41% of its population below the age of 20, according to newly-released data from the 2011 Census.

Around 50% of India's population is in the 20-59 age group, and only 9% is above the age of 60 years. These figures actually represent a decline from the previous Census in 2001, when 45% of the population was below 20 years. There is also an increase in the share of senior citizens, due to increasing life span.

The data also indicated that Muslims had the highest proportion of people below 19 years at 47%, followed by Hindus at 40% and Jains at 29%. However, it also suggested that Indian Muslims also die young, with only 6.4% of the population above 60 years.
