A man snuck onto an aircraft's landing gear to stow away on an hour-long flight to Jakarta, Indonesia.

Mario Steven Ambarita, 21, told authorities he had spent a year planning how to sneak on to the plane. He was discovered when the Garuda flight landed.

"He really put his safety in danger," said Suprasetyo, director general of Indonesia's air transport ministry. "But his condition is now fine."

Although the flight was short, the Boeing 737-800 jet could have flown as high as 34,000 feet, where air is thin and temperatures are below freezing. Ambarita had some injuries, but was able to walk upon landing, a Garuda spokesperson told The Jakarta Post.

“He is not yet stable," the spokesperson reportedly said. "His fingers turned blue and one of his ears was bleeding."

“He said he wanted to see Jakarta, the city where he was born."

Indonesia's air transport ministry promised Wednesday that security at local airports would be improved to prevent a similar incident from happening again.

While rare, stowaways on landing gear happen occasionally, much to aviation regulators' chagrin. Last year, a teenager survived a five-hour flight from California to Hawaii while stowed away in the landing gear.

"It sounds really incredible," aviation expert Jeff Wise told CNN. "Being in a wheel well is like all of a sudden being on top of Mount Everest."
