Indian software giant Infosys is planning to build the world's tallest free-standing clock tower at its campus in the southern city of Mysuru, around 150 kilometres away from its headquarters in Bengaluru. At 135 metres, the proposed tower will soar above landmarks such as Old Joe, Big Ben, Hoover Tower and McGraw Tower.
The tower will be a blend of classical architecture and digital technology. While it will be built in the Gothic style, in keeping with the classical look of the surrounding buildings, it will have a digital timepiece that can also be used to display messages.
The building is being designed by famous Indian architect Hafeez Contractor, who was also responsible for the company's Mysuru campus. Spread over 350 acres, the sprawling campus is used to train new recruits and often described as the world's largest corporate university.
The record-breaking tower reflects the company's aspirations. Estimated to cost Rs 600 million ($8.8 million), it is expected to be completed within 20 months. Built on a 22x22 metre base, the 19-floor structure will also have a board room, a visitor lounge, viewing rooms and restaurants.
Currently, Birmingham's 100 metre-high Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, popularly known as Old Joe, is considered to be the tallest clock tower in the world.
