LOS ANGELES -- This weekend was enough to make a Pixar executive experience all the emotions at once.

Inside Out opened to $91 million at the domestic box office this weekend, the studio's second best debut behind Toy Story 3 ($110.3 million), making the tearjerking journey inside the mind a bona fide smash hit by any measure. Well, except one.

Inside Out was also the first of 15 Pixar films not to open at No. 1.

That honor belonged to Jurassic World, which made a towering $102 million in its second weekend, following up last week's record-wrecking $207.4 million debut.

Now then, the horse race of it all is a silly distinction -- a little thing we media types like to play up for headlines. Though there is some competition for moviegoers, there's no studio bonus for making the most money on any given weekend.

Pixar roared back to life after a more than two-year dormancy with a brainy masterpiece, soaring well above the $60 million-plus projections; while Jurassic World became only the second movie to ring the $100 million bell in back-to-back weekends. By all accounts, this was a sizzling weekend at the movies, with enough to go around for everyone.

And here's something Inside Out has over Jurassic World: The Pixar film was the highest weekend opening gross in history for a wholly original film -- meaning it's not based on something else, e.g. a comic book or previous movie.

Still, we can't shake this feeling about that streak being over ...
