The New York Public Library is well known for its extensive collection of books, but the colossal institution also houses nearly 500,000 maps.

The massive cartographic collection spans across 500 years, including items such as hand-drawn maps by Maj. Gen. Daniel Butterfield who fought in the Civil War, fire insurance maps that document New York City at the building level, and artwork from the 18th century.
