Earlier, in a tweet that has since been deleted, the company said it was aware of the outage but did not reveal the source of the problem or how long a fix would take.
According to DownDetector.com, a site that tracks service outages and disruptions based on reports from Twitter and other sources, issues began on Thursday around 3:25 p.m. ET. The site IsItDownRightNow.com also noted the service disruption.

This was the first time Instagram has had an outage since they moved off of Amazon Web Services and onto Facebook earlier this summer.
The photo-sharing service experienced a brief outage in May, when the app and website went down for about 40 minutes, following another, longer, service disruption in April.
As with prior outages, distraught users have flocked to Twitter to vent their frustrations.
