What are the flavors of your neighborhood? Do you think you could describe it through hashtags?
That's what Instagram has set out to do in a new report, Instagram's Neighborhood Flavors, which might even teach you something about your own neighborhood.
The study considered all Instagram posts with hashtags that were geographically annotated in the U.S. from October 2014 to July 2015. The researchers then used the anonymized data to map hashtags to different neighborhood boundaries in U.S. cities, identifying places that have an affinity for certain hashtags (and what they represent), and also creating profiles of the places based on the sum of popular hashtags.
Some of the topics that Instagram grouped hashtags into include Foodies & Bars, popular in neighborhoods like Nashville's Greenwood where refreshments rule activities; Downtown Tourists, for places where architecture and office parks reign; and Bohemian Urbanists -- we're looking at you, Brooklyn.
"To categorize neighborhoods, we want types (our 'flavors') that span many cities but differentiate neighborhoods within them," the report states. "It is undeniable that people like to Instagram about food and alcohol."
What Instagram is after is where the differences are.
Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Williamsburg is so hip it's a parody of itself. In Instagram's study, the top flavors of geo-tagged posts in the neighborhood were Bohemian Urbanists, Artists & Musicians, Foodies & Bars, and Home & Family.
