If there's one app that can be credited with the rise of the selfie, it's Instagram. But now the Facebook-owned photo app is introducing a new kind of selfie -- the "selfielapse."

Hyperlapse, Instagram's newest standalone app for time-lapse videos, got its first major update Thursday that allows users to shoot videos from their iPhones' front-facing cameras.

The updated app now has a small button next to the shutter that toggles between the front- and rear-facing cameras. Switching to the front camera will alert you that you are switching to "selfielapse" mode.

Time-lapse selfie videos work the same way as videos shot with the rear camera in Hyperlapse -- begin recording and two timers begin. The first tracks how long your video is and the second tells you how long your final video will be when compressed to the default 6x playback speed.

As with non-selfie Hyperlapses, the final video is put through the app's stabilization process, so even those with the shakiest of hands will have a smooth final product.

Hyperlapse is Instagram's second standalone app. The first was direct messaging app called Bolt, which is still only available to Android users in a coupe of countries.
