If you’re familiar with Twitter Search, the preview that the company is showing off on its blog of the integrated product will look familiar. In a new link in Twitter's main navigation bar, you’ll see the 10 most popular current trends (things being tweeted about the most at the current point in time) and a search box to query on any topic you’d like. Both of those return a list of the most recent tweets about the topic you’re interested in, as well as a link to the profile of the user that tweeted it.
I’ve been a huge user of the service since back when it was Summize, and use it avidly to monitor what people are saying about Mashable (it’s a good gauge of what articles people like … and catching typos and broken links!), and we’ve often written about its power as a brand management tool. But given the obscure location of it, I wonder how many others have actually tried it out and use it regularly, especially given the influx of new users to Twitter in the past few months.
The power of the feature is clear. It’s not only a real-time sentiment index and chat room-like feature for different topics, but also an amazing way to address one of new user’s big problems – finding people to follow, beyond the “suggested users” that was recently added. Once search goes live to everyone, the value of Twitter should become immediately more obvious, and could also help keep the company on its incredible growth trajectory.
