A thinner iPad mini is almost certainly on the way.

Freshly leaked 3D computer-aided design (CAD) images from OnLeaks corroborate earlier reports that the next iPad mini, which will likely be called the iPad mini 4, will be as thin as the iPad Air 2.

OnLeaks has a history of accurately leaking products ahead of their respective announcement events.

The current iPad mini 3 measures 0.29-inches thick. If the leaked CAD design models are to believed, the iPad mini 4 could be as thin as 0.24-inches.

The iPad mini 3 received a modest update when it was introduced last year — the only changes from the iPad mini 2 being a TouchID fingerprint sensor and a gold color.

In addition to be being razor thin, the iPad mini 4 is expected to get a new processor, possibly 2GB of RAM and improved cameras -- all features to bring it up to par with the iPad Air 2. The iPad mini could also get a laminated display and an anti-reflective coating.

It's still unknown when Apple will launch the new iPad mini 4. Apple is reportedly planning to announce new iPhones and possibly a slimmer Apple TV with a touchpad-based remote in September.

If the new iPad doesn't make an appearance in September, Apple could hold a separate event later just for the iPad. It's been rumored the company also has plans to announce a 12.9-inch iPad Pro by the end of this year.
