Music industry informants told CNET that Apple has obtained the rights to sell the pre-cut music snippets and are rushing to get them ready for its "rock and roll"-themed press conference on September.
It's sort of odd timing, as ringtone popularity has ebbed a bit since its heydey when users were willing to pay $3 to get a short, low-quality snippet of their favorite songs to play when someone calls them. Apple hasn't indicated what their pricing scheme will be for the ready-made ringtones, but with full tracks going for $0.69 to $1.29 we hope the voice of reason brings down the cost to less than that of an actual whole track.
